I focus on portraiture, through painting, drawing and photography. Usually depicting members of my family, the portraits are personal, sentimental and intimate. A personal reflection on family matters drives my artwork, and brings people together in what is a ‘shared’, private experience.
The main focus of this work is to share feelings on a private, yet non-unique experience, as everyone has a family of some description. Allowing the viewer to see how the subject matter is depicted through the use of colour and style representing how family life is often bland, mixing with uncommon colour and style to differentiate from mere photographical representation, whilst maintaining realism.
A key inspiration for the expression of family relationships is Thomas Struth, who focusses on non-narrative portraits of families, that involves the viewer’s speculation to fill the portrait with meaning and context. Inspiration was also drawn from a range of other portrait artists, namely, Jenny Saville and Nick Lepard. The concepts taken from these artists are their use of expressive, yet truthful, representation of the subject; a style that drives my current work.
